Nyungwe Forest National Park
Nyungwe Forest National Park, The park was established in 2004 covering approximately 970km and it is located southwest of Rwanda bordering Burundi. The park has one other world’s most breathtaking landscape best reserved rainforest, bamboo, grassland, swamps, marshes and open woodland.
The park also has views of over Lake Kivu, mount Bigugu and sometimes the Virunga ranges on a clear day. Nyungwe Forest National Park has a rich bio-diversity numerous mammalian species namely; chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, leopards, giant forest hogs, golden cats and various indigenous birds such as chestnut owlet, olive and Elliot’s woodpeckers, barred long-tailed cuckoo among others.
The estimates of indigenous species that live in Nyungwe National Park are far greater than the ones in any other forests along the Albertine Rift Mountains.
One of the activities enjoyed by visitors to the park is nature and hiking walks in the forest with different trails to choose from; Congo-Nile divide trail, The Igishigishigi trail, Karamba trail,Umugote trail, Uwinka trail, Rukui trail and others and also canopy walks, cultural tours as well.
Getting to the National Park is by driving from Kigali to Nyanza to Huye and finally Nyungwe National Park. Which takes approximately 5 hours. Alternatively guests can chatter a helicopter from Akagera Aviation.
