Akagera National Park, The park is the largest and only savanna park in Rwanda occupying approximately 1122km2 and located east next to the Tanzanian boarder. The park  established in 1934 to provide a sanctuary for animals. And conserve the vegetation in the savanna, mountain and swamp.

Akagera derives its name from River Kagera which flows through the park east pouring into several Lakes. Including Lake Ihema which is the Largest on all of them. The park is also home to the largest protected wetland in Africa.

The park is your ultimate tourist destination for wildlife Safaris in the country coupled. With a moderately warm climate because of its lower altitude. Making it to favorably accommodate low-lying savanna and rolling plants of broad leaf and acacia woodlands.

There three water bodies found in the park namely; Lake Shakini, Lake Ihema River Kagera. Currently the park has all the big five animals including elephants, rhinos, lions and buffalos. Other animal species include zebras, impala, bush back, eland crocodiles and bird species; shoebill stork, the papyrus gonoleck and a large concentration of water birds.

Activities enjoyed by the visitors include, mountain gorilla trekking, bird watching, game drives, boat trips, fishing, hiking and community culture experiences.

Visitors can access the park from Kigali by road which is 120km a two and half hour drive or by chattering a helicopter from Akagera Aviation from Kigali to Magera which takes 22 minutes.
